The most recent appropriations for the Department of War expired at 11:59 p.m. EST on September 30, 2025. Military personnel will continue to work in normal duty status without pay until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Civilian personnel not engaged in excepted activities will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status.

During this partial government shutdown, the 88th Medical Group remains open and continues to honor scheduled medical and dental appointments. Our appointment line is open and we are still taking requests for appointments. Our operating room, primary care and specialty care clinics are fully operational. Ancillary services (pharmacy, laboratory, radiology) are also operating normally. As always, safe and high-quality health care remain our priority and we are doing our best to minimize impact on our beneficiaries and their health care during this partial government shutdown. Please call (937) 522-APPT to schedule or cancel appointments. For questions about TRICARE during the shutdown, please visit tricare.mil/shutdown

Program Summary

The EM program is tied with SAMMC for the largest EM program in the AF.  Miami Valley Hospital (the main Dayton area level-1 trauma center) and Kettering Hospital are its main affiliated teaching sites.  Training in this program puts a heavy emphasis on developing EM physicians capable of operating autonomously in deployed locations.

General Surgery

The majority of the training occurs at Miami Valley Hospital. In addition to 4 AF categorical residents per year, WSU has partnered with the USAF every year and trained additional transitional residents in general surgery.

Internal Medicine

Length and Class Size

3-year program/12-14 residents per year

Program Summary

The IM residency is based out of three hospitals: Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton VA Medical Center, and WPMC.  Residents staff inpatient teams and provide 24-7 in-house coverage at each facility.  They perform all their outpatient training at WPMC.

OB/GYN

Length and Class Size

4-year program/3 graduates per year

Program Summary

The majority of the clinical experiences are at Miami Valley Hospital.  WPMC provides some gynecologic specialty faculty (e.g. Gynecology Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Gynecology Urology), and the residency staffs the WPMC birthing center delivering over 300 babies per year.

Pediatrics

Length and Class Size

3-year program/8-9 graduates per year

Program Summary

The Pediatric residency program has a long history of collaboration between WSU, Dayton Children's Hospital (DCH), and WPMC.  The residents do all their inpatient and most of their specialty training at DCH, but the outpatient and nursery experiences for military and civilians are here at Wright-Patterson.

Psychiatry

Length and Class Size

4-year program/4-6 graduates per year
